"When young children can rely on a responsive caregiver for reassurance when upset or stressed, they derive a sense of security and well-being that is essential to the ability to thrive." (241)
As a child, you never quite realize how much of an impact your mom or the person who took care of you has on your life. The first few years of your life are crucial and will have an impact on the rest of your life. I never stopped to think about what happens to the children who don't have the support they need when they are younger. One thing that psychologists found interesting, were children's fascia's with animals."children and animals shared a natural kinship."(242) The saying that says a dog is
a man's best friend is a true statement. An animal in a child's life has a huge impact on their everyday life and how they grow up. Whenever my friends go home, the first thing they say is that they're excited to see their pets. Unfortunately, I didn't grow up with a dog or cat in the house, but that is something I want my children to experience in their childhood. I think having a pet has several positive attributes for children while they are growing up and it teaches them several valuable lessons.
As we get older, our views of certain things change and we outgrow some of the things we once enjoyed doing. As children most of the stories that were read to us were about animals and tying valuable lessons to them. "We might argue that the desire to comprehend and communicate with animals in infantile, but if we do not have these narratives of communication then we will lose contact with a large part of our world." (263) As we get older, we get busy doing the things that seem important to us at that moment. However, sometimes it's the simple things that we need to
remember. Animals taught us so many valuable lessons when we were younger and they can still teach us valuable lessons if were open to learning them. My goal for this year is to stay off of social media and start noticing the details. There is so much more to life than twitter and instagram. I hope to discover more possibilities throughout the year.
